Towards MultiplePortfolio Organisations

When designing the implementation of an ePortfolio, the questions designers ask are: what ePortfolio platform should we use? What will happen to the people who already had or have an ePortfolio? For example, a member of EIfEL who needs to demonstrate his/her continuing professional development with an ePortfolio can also be a member of the Institute for Learning that uses REFLECT, based on PebblePad, work at a college using eXact Portfolio to support teaching and Multi-Port to support the delivery of NVQs, and have children attending a school equipped with Mahara.

Another approach is possible: an architecture where MultiplePortfolio organizations do not have to select a particular ePortfolio platform, where it is possible to leave each student select his/her own system while providing better services and foster increased innovation. This can achieved by disaggregating ePortfolio systems into a number of loosely coupled web services, and unifying, under user control, the whole of his/her personal data.
